NOTE : Procedure is to release the transferred tissue and reconstruct the host site and open the new eyelid.

He underwent the planned first stage eyelid procedures last January 27, 2009 at the Philippine General Hospital under your group’s sponsorship. He is now 6 weeks from the last surgery and he has healed well. In layman’s terms, the left upper lid was repaired by loosening its attachments and rearranging the tissues to reconstruct the eyelid. It has healed well and is in very good cosmetic position. The right upper eyelid was a bigger challenge because of the poor development of a significant portion of it. Actually only about one fourth of the eyelid existed. Because of this situation, I had to transfer a flap of tissue from the lower lid to take the place of the lost tissue. It was done as a flap, meaning to say that the tissue borrowed from the lower eyelid is still attached to its original place. In effect, part of the lower lid swings to the upper lid area covering the eyeball.

Presently the flap of tissue seems to have integrated well to its new site at the right upper lid and has developed adequate blood supply. It is the right time now to release the flap from its original site (lower lid) and continue the task of reconstructing the upper lid with the new tissue which was put in place. This is the second stage that I was referring to in my first letter to you (see below).

So far, Tristan has done well despite the difficult task set before us. The work has been worthwhile because Tristan is a very happy and brave boy. I have scheduled his second surgery in June and will push through if it meets with your organization’s approval. I have attached his pre and post op photographs for your evaluation.
